WORKING ON “MOTHER MOTHRA” VIDEO SCENE

This morning’s rehearsal is focused on the creation of our “Mother Mothra” scene. Haruko, Leo and I are looking at excting ways to use video. So, inspired by Gene Kelly (see below), we want to create a choreography between Haruko and “Haruko”. We are just getting our feet wet. This scene is an argument between the girl character and her evil “MOTHER MOTHRA” - a shape shifting creature who says

“Im the mother you erased,

Im your father long lost,

Im your twin sister from you dream,

Im anything you want me to be.”

HERE IS A LITTLE CUT FROM A SKETCH RECORDING (its for the new album, but this is not the version that will appear on the album - just a little snippet played on guitar and pantrhastic harp zither with Haruko singing)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

We are thinking about ways that they can interact. If anyone knows any really cool video tricks that can be accomplished with this as a live performance, wed love to hear about it!

FROM PORTLAND FILM SHOOT

These photos were taken during the 2 day film test shoot for the “SLUG PRINCESS” film. Haruko and Ian and Mandy pouring over notebooks, inspiration images, brainstorming. Some of the shots were filmed in a vegetable garden, and others in a dank dark basement. There was a magnificent thunderstorm on the first night with unbelievable showers!

Slug Princess Project: May 31, 2008 Short Documentary
http://vimeo.com/1098635

We got the ball rolling on this new project. Festering for the past few months as we waited for the right season, time, and individual schedules to work out.

This video mainly shows us messing with possible sounds and eventually music for the short film. With a looming deadline to gather up more funding, we threw together a short 2 minute clip to send out ( http://vimeo.com/1092096 ) and got it in on time. Cross our fingers. So then I decided to start putting up short docs about the process. Maybe you’ll find them interesting.

About this video:
“Shows process of recording sounds/music for project in early May, sample footage from test shoot, and using test shoot footage for Dance Films Association application.

In the video: Joshua Kohl, Haruko Nishimura and Ian Lucero

Costume by: Mandy Greer
Filmed in: Seattle, WA at The Pink House, May 11
Portland, OR at The A House, May 17-19
Filmed on a Panasonic DVX100a and a HVX200(loaned to us by Dalas Verdugo and Vimeo.com)

FIRST FILM SKETCHES UNDER WAY

I, Haruko Nishimura and Mandy Greer and Ian Lucero started our film sketches in Portland last weekend at Ian and Kamala’s lovely place. It was a VERY PERFECT PLACE to start out miniature scale sketches with our loose story board of what we wanted to try out, experiment, and a perfect place to gather and start to bounce our ideas off of each other, desires for the film and share each other’s resources. The meaty part of our dance film is going to be finalized and filmed, edited in this fall of september. Ian and Kamala has a lovely garden full of earthly PHOTOGENIC things like moist mudd, bright green cute clover patches, tall grasses and dwarfy trees, a bright orange cottage, HAPPY FARMER FENCE and lots of birds, squirrels, sometimes white sky, and warm 70’s sunlight. LOTS of earthworms. We had a monsoon-like violent thunder rain after our long day’s meeting and the next day we were able to start shooting for the images.I got into white makeup and laid in the wet cold grass.Mandy and I got our hands entangled in her crochet madness.Ian worked hard working meticuluosly with his camera, taking shots over and over until he got what he needed. I also got to GORGE AND CHOMP on DIRT-MARINATED CABBAGES for few takesunder their crawl space in the basement and enjoyed it very much. What I enjoyed most was a lot of our shootings were us going by our intuitions and strong visions… It is a good little start full of promises…

filmproject - FIRST FILM SHOOT - PORTLAND, OR

Portland

Mandy, Ian and Haruko are meeting in the Ian/Kamala Portland house for their first big summit on the film they are collaborating on to be shot in September. Portland is sunny. Perfect. They sit under Japanese Maple tree and iron out their ideas while humming birds feed above - Mandy’s boys are digging holes in the garden for kamala. Basically a perfect Portland day. This work will go on for two days, the goal to get things rolling on the project. Mandy’s son Hazel has been tricked into wearing a tassely gold-lamet dress to do his digging in. The film chronicles the life of a “Slug Princess”. There will be much footage taken in all of our gardens. Mandy brought samples of her crochet slug slime.
